Latin 1

                                                                                      Why Latin?

This is a great question for anyone - Dorothy Sayers points out that when you study Latin, there are multiple benefits:

                     1. Approximately 60% of the vocabulary in our language comes from Latin.
This means students are not just learning Latin- they are learning to be more proficient in their own language.
                   2. It has been shown that verbal scores on the SAT increase dramatically with the study of Latin.
                   3. Students of Latin are trained in a method of rigorous analysis.
This requires concentration, analysis, and puzzle solving that develop a student into a true student.
                   4. Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian and Portuguese are direct descendants of Latin.
Students studying Latin find it relatively easy to learn other Romance languages.
                   5. The study of Latin grammar also strengthens a student’s understanding of English Grammar.
                   6. Many professions are steeped in Latin vocabulary: law, medicine, science, music, art, philosophy, and theology.
                  7. Deciphering the “secret code” of Latin and being able to read great authors in their own tongue, brings great joy!

I teach four levels of Latin.

Latin 1 introduces students to all 5 declensions, 1st and 2nd adjectives and 1st conjugation verbs.
In addition to learning new vocabulary each week, words will be declined and conjugated.
Parsing and labeling of sentences are also required which will include diagramming sentences.
Students will be translating from Latin to English and English to Latin.

There will be weekly homework assignments.
Each student must purchase an answer key and parents must use this to oversee their work.
There will be weekly vocabulary quizzes as well as occasional take home tests.

All students will have the opportunity to take the National Latin Exam in March.
